   Charity Dinner

Hotel Zira, Belgrade
1
st December 2011

BELhospice organized a Charity dinner with the aim to emphasize the great needs of cancer patients for quality palliative care as well as to raise funds for the work with those patients.

BELhospice's Director, Mr. Zoran Purkovic, thanked to all of the guests and said that BELhospice home care palliative care teams cared for terminally ill cancer patients for the last seven years. These patients are among the most vulnerable social groups in our society and require special care, called palliative care. He further warned that the pain both physical and mental for those patients and their families can often be unbearable. "So our message is clear, said Purkovic, this can be prevented and we can help such patients and their families." Purkovic presented the data that currently BELhospice can take care of about 250 patients per year but this is insufficient given the needs. "Thanks to the charity events like this one, BELhospice is planning to increase that number to 1000 patients by the end of 2012. But the ultimate and only true goal of BELhospice is to build a hospice, i.e. inpatient facility for the care of terminally ill patients. Only then will we be able to say that we helped them properly."

Guests were then addressed by Dr. Kim Adzich who has demonstrated in his speech the relationship between Serbia and Canada and the way the terminally ill are treated. He briefly presented how it happened that so many Canadians have heard about BELhospice and decided to support palliative care in Serbia with donations.

Following this speech, BELhospice team showed a short video about three of its patients. These patients spoke from their perspective about their illnesses, the suffering and how much help and support, that they received from BELhospice, meant to them.

This charity dinner has enabled BELhospice to raise significant funds to work with patients and promote palliative care.

This event was supported by HE Michael Davenport, British Ambassador, HE Roman Waschuk, Ambassador of Canada, HE Semuel Samson, Ambassador of the Republic of Indonesia, Mrs. Ann Pesic, Consul of the Republic of Ireland in Serbia, as well as number of companies and individuals.

BELhospice would like to thank hotel Zira's management who hosted the event and whose personal efforts have contributed to make this evening a truly unforgettable.
